Weekly Food & Homework Packages

How is our childcare centre currently operating? How can we supply for the needs of our sponsor children while still following government protocol?

Gerrit recently shared some pictures and captions that I have gathered to give you a glimpse into how the child care centre is operating right now.

All schools have been closed since the beginning of April and originally we were handing out daily meals to our sponsor children. They would come to the centre with the empty plastic container from the previous day’s meal and would exchange it for a full container that the cooks had prepared that morning.

The government was not happy with this setup as we were the only school in the area that was still bringing children together in any way. Because we accept the most vulnerable, impoverished children into our program we know how important it is to continue with at least providing food. We compromised with the government by arranging a weekly distribution of corn flour and soya pieces for the family to take home. This allows for our children to be sustained throughout the week.

The children bring pails with them to put the maize flour in. It makes for a good seat while the pastor does a meditation. Below is a carousel of images of the children receiving their food. As you can see the teachers are proud of their face masks and they have found a way to successfully keep the younger children “distanced” from one another by drawing squares on the ground.

Two weeks ago there was still no talks of opening the schools so Gerrit instructed the teachers to create a homework package for the children. The children excitedly received their packages and we hope that we can retain some of the information that has been taught to them throughout the year. Last week they came with their completed homework packages and exchanged it for a new one!

Please remember our team and beneficiaries as they navigate these new challenges.

We apologize that it has been some time since we have connected with you via this blog but we hope to continue with our regular posts now! Our next blog will include how we are assisting the children as they enter their “winter” season.
